Kuusamo
The unspoilt nature of Finland

Kuusamo is an area in Finland, located on the southeastern part of Finnish Lapland, near the Russian border. Kuusamo has an area of 5808 square kilometres, of which 830 square kilometres are taken up by water. In the summer it is a beautiful walking and water sports area, in the winter Kuusamo is known for its winter sports activities. But regardless of the season, the nature of Finland is always impressive. Pristine as it was three thousand years ago with a great diversity of flora and fauna. Nature lovers and photographers also get what they came for in Kuusamo: a beautiful picture of the balance between human and nature in Finland.

Kuusamo: land of the Sami

Until the seventeenth century, the area that we now know as Kuusamo was the territory of the Sami. This semi-nomadic people lived in the villages of Maanselkä and Kitka in the winter. When spring came, they moved to the rivers. When the ice had melted, they fished and collected berries and mushrooms. In the fall, they hunted reindeer, bears and beavers in the forest. They also had a barter trade with the Finns on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and the Karelians on the White Sea coast.

Today, the Sami have mainly adopted the modern lifestyle of Finland. But the knowledge of hunting and gathering, what is edible and in which season it grows and how to live off the land without exploiting it, is honoured. In addition, they have a deep-rooted respect for the nature of Finland, everything that lives in it and comes out of it.
