Take a breath!
Refresh yourself in the Finnish sauna on Lake Kitka.

The sauna ritual has been an integral part of Finnish life for centuries. It has a positive effect on body and mind, as the warm Finnish sauna ensures that the body loses toxins faster. The regular exposure to cold has a beneficial effect on the immune system, stress resistance and adaptation to cold. The endorphins released during cold exposure alleviate any pain and have a positive influence on one’s mood. From the hot sauna a short walk through the snow, followed by an immersion in an ice sea or lake such as Lake Kitka, is the normal 'way of life' in Finland.

Breathing techniques

Obviously we all breathe, but good breathing technique is not always obvious. The correct breathing technique ensures less stress and a better focus in your mind. A combination of the Finnish sauna, an immersion in the largest freshwater source in Europe Lake Kitka and the learning of breathing techniques, is a key part of our program.

Program

You will be welcomed with a cup of beneficial Chaga tea, a local specialty from the primeval forests of Finnish Lapland, after which you will be initiated into our meditative Tummo breathing technique in our yoga room. After this you prepare for the first round in the traditional Finnish sauna, under the guidance of an instructor. In the Finnish sauna you put the new breathing technique into practice while enjoying the warmth and steam of water from Lake Kitka. After the sauna you go outside to cool off in the winter in the snow or under the cold shower, in the summer by swimming in Lake Kitka. After the second visit to the Finnish sauna, take a refreshing dip in the ice water of Lake Kitka to cool off - also during the winter season. The cold releases endorphins and other hormones and you will intensively experience the beneficial effect on body and mind. The learned Tummo breathing technique and the serenity of Lake Kitka also contribute to this. During the third round you apply all the learned sauna and breathing techniques yourself. This is followed by a short and personal evaluation with the instructor about your Finnish sauna experience and breathing technique, and there is time for a local delicacy, a refreshing drink and a wonderful retreat in front of a crackling open fire.
